The olive green matte shell has battle-damage detailing, which gives it a burly yet sleek allure. The controller also features a metallic gold radial D-pad, which you can remove to reveal a more traditional four-direction D-pad that incorporates Cortana's signature blue hue, which adds a nice depth to the design.

As a standalone product, the "Starfield" controller perfectly captures the pristine and idealistic sci-fi aesthetic that the game incorporates. All in all, this is a rare instance wherein the proverbial side dish is better than the main dish itself. For whatever reason, see-through shells were all the rage in the gaming market during the late 90s and early 2000s.

If you want to put your own spin on those controllers, you can spend a few extra dollars at the Xbox Design Lab. The online customization tool lets you outfit a gamepad with your favorite colors and an engraved name, which Microsoft then builds and ships to you. The Xbox Design Lab debuted during the Xbox One era, but it now offers the Xbox Wireless Controller included with the Xbox Series X/S and the Elite Core controller (with the option of purchasing the full set of Elite accessories). The ability to customize already excellent gamepads for a reasonable premium earns Xbox Design Lab our Editors' Choice award.

Furthermore, the buttons on the fretboard (which are used to play notes in-game) can also be used for menu navigation. Overall, the buttons do feel of decent quality too which goes some way to offset the disappointing body. I love everything on the controller except for the grip on the thumbstick pads of the interchangeable thumbsticks. My only concern is that the thumbstick grips actually are more slick than grip.
